Knee pain can interfere with walking, climbing stairs, working, exercising, and getting out of a chair. It may begin suddenly after an injury or develop gradually because of osteoarthritis, repetitive activity, or age-related changes. Identifying the source is important because several knee conditions can produce similar symptoms but require different treatment.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
Our orthopedic team evaluates and treats osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, meniscus tears, ACL and other ligament injuries, patellofemoral pain, kneecap instability, tendon injuries, bursitis, sports injuries, and pediatric and adult fractures.
Symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness, catching, locking, or the sensation that the knee is giving way. The location of the pain, how it began, and which activities make it worse can provide useful clues.
Evaluating Knee Pain
An evaluation begins with a review of symptoms, activity level, previous injuries, and treatment history. The provider examines motion, alignment, strength, stability, and areas of tenderness. When appropriate, X-rays can be completed in the office during the same appointment. If a meniscus, ligament, cartilage, or tendon injury is suspected, an MRI may be ordered through an outside imaging facility.
Knee Pain Treatment
Many knee conditions improve without surgery. Treatment may include activity modification, bracing, physical therapy, medication, or a corticosteroid injection. PRP or BMAC may be discussed for selected conditions after the diagnosis, evidence, alternatives, expense, and goals are reviewed.
When surgery is appropriate, available procedures include knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction, patellar tendon repair, fracture treatment, and total knee replacement. Recommendations are based on diagnosis, symptom severity, activity demands, health, and response to nonsurgical treatment.
When to Seek Treatment
Schedule an evaluation if pain persists, limits activity, repeatedly causes swelling, or makes the knee lock or give way. Seek urgent treatment after a major injury if the knee is deformed, weight-bearing is impossible, or swelling is severe. A red, hot, swollen knee accompanied by fever or illness also requires prompt evaluation.
