Hand or wrist pain can make it difficult to type, write, drive, lift, open containers, or perform detailed work. Symptoms may result from injury, repetitive use, arthritis, nerve compression, or a tendon disorder.
Common Causes
Our orthopedic team evaluates carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, de Quervain's tenosynovitis, thumb CMC and wrist arthritis, ganglion cysts, sprains, ligament injuries, fractures, and tendon injuries. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, weakness, catching, reduced grip, or difficulty moving a finger or wrist. Nerve compression can cause numbness, tingling, burning, or nighttime symptoms.
A scaphoid fracture near the base of the thumb can resemble a wrist sprain and may not be immediately obvious. Persistent pain after a fall onto an outstretched hand should be evaluated.
Evaluation
The provider assesses motion, grip strength, tendon function, circulation, and sensation. Same-day X-rays may identify fractures, arthritis, and alignment changes. MRI may be ordered externally for selected ligament, tendon, or hidden-fracture concerns. Nerve-conduction testing may be recommended when nerve compression is suspected.
Treatment
Nonsurgical treatment may include activity modification, splinting, medication, hand therapy, or a corticosteroid injection. Delayed treatment for certain fractures and tendon injuries can affect healing.
Available surgical services include carpal tunnel release, trigger-finger release, thumb CMC arthroplasty, tendon repair, and fracture fixation. When more than one accepted technique exists, present the options neutrally.
When to Seek Treatment
Arrange an evaluation for persistent pain, progressive numbness, grip weakness, finger catching, or symptoms that fail to improve after injury. Seek urgent treatment for severe deformity, an open wound, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of finger movement, sudden numbness, or pale, blue, or unusually cool fingers.
